STORIA DELLA CANZONE:
“Joshua fit the battle” è un tradizionale spiritual che è datato, circa, 1865.
Una delle primissime registrazioni di questa canzone fu quella dei Harrod’s Jubilee Singers nel settembre del 1924 (Paramount 12116) col titolo “Joshua fought the battle of Jericho”.
L’anno seguente Paul Roberson (Vic 19743) ebbe un grosso successo con il brano così come Marshall Bartholomew nel 1930 e Thelma Carpenter dieci anni più tardi.
Si può tranquillamente affermare che “Joshua fit the battle” sia stata registrata almeno una volta da ogni gruppo Gospel americano, in quanto si tratta di una delle più classiche canzoni di quel genere. Essa rappresenta uno standard nel repertorio di molti interpreti, in particolare di Mahalia Jackson.
Il testo biblico a cui il brano si ispira è il capitolo 6 del libro di Giosuè, che narra la vicenda della presa della città di Gerico.
